Simple Homemade Hummus

I love hummus.  It’s a great combination of protein and fiber, it tastes delicious and it encourages my kids to eat more veggies (they love to dip!).  While it is definitely easy to buy hummus from the supermarket, after reading this blog post from the Food Babe I think I’m going to stick to making my own! (who wants GMOs, cheap oils and preservatives in their hummus?  Not me!).  Thankfully making your own hummus couldn’t be easier.  You just need some organic chickpeas (canned makes it really simple, but you can use dried as wel), tahini, garlic and lemon and a food processor or vitamix…

Simple Homemade Hummus

  • 15-ounce can of organic chickpeas, rinsed and drained (reserve a few for garnishing)

  • 1/2 cup tahini paste

  • freshly squeezed juice of one lemon

  • 2-3 small cloves garlic, roughly chopped
(more if you like your hummus really garlicky!)

  • a pinch of kosher salt

  • ¼ cup water

  • Olive oil and paprika for garnish

Place the chickpeas, tahini, lemon and garlic into a food processor or vitamix and blend.  Once combined, scrape down the sides and continue to blend while drizzling in the water until you get very smooth consistency (I usually use about 1/4 cup).  I like to blend my hummus for about 3-4 minutes.  Transfer hummus to a small round plate, sprinkle with paprika, add a few whole chickpeas and drizzle with olive oil.  Serve with your favorite raw veggies and enjoy!

**you can store this hummus in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
